QB recruit Myles Brennan 'still a Tiger,' but what will be fallout from Les Miles' firing?

Myles Brennan, the leading passing in Mississippi high school football history, is “still a Tiger,” his high school coach told USA TODAY Sports on Sunday in the aftermath of LSU’s firing of coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

Brennan, ranked as the No. 5 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2017, committed to LSU in April and was among 20 commits in the class thus far.

“He took it in stride,” Saint Stanislaus coach Bill Conides said. “That’s a testament to him and the kinda kid he is. … We have been preparing for this and planning for this should it happen. It did not come as a shock. We were hoping for the best. …

“He committed to the coaches but also the school. Can that change? Absolutely. Signing Day is still 10 months away. He picked LSU because he wants to be a Tiger.”

Conides note that Brennan had a strong relationship with “two great men, first and foremost” and that he “admired them tremendously.” Brennan also has family ties to LSU with several family members who are alumni and a cousin who is the assistant cheerleader coach.

Brennan tweeted, “Sad to hear that Coach Miles and Coach Cameron will no longer be a part of the LSU family,” but directed questions to Conides, who has been working with him since the eighth grade.

He later tweeted:

Conides said he wanted Brennan’s focus to be “winning the game on Friday night and hopefully winning the next 10 weeks,” but he acknowledged the intensity around Brennan will increase as coaches from other schools continue to try to pry him away from LSU given the uncertain coaching situation.

“Even though he committed to LSU, there have still been schools heavily recruiting him,” Conides said. “Does this magnify the situation? Sure, but the biggest thing that is most important is for Myles to keep this all in perspective. This is part of the business. This is the SEC. There’s a lot of different things involved at the college level when something like this happens.

“All he can do is control his own situation and work on becoming the best quarterback he can.”

Conides said he and Brennan have had no conversations about anyplace other than LSU and they will monitor the coaching situation to see who Miles’ successor will be.

“It’s safe to say that if the next coach runs the Navy triple option, he’s not going to LSU,” Conides said, with a laugh. “That being said, we’ll see who comes in and the system he runs and his plan for Myles.”

Brennan has thrown for 1,648 yards and 18 touchdowns this season and has not thrown an interception.

Reactions from other recruits came in via social media.

JaCoby Stevens, who decommitted when it seemed Miles’ job was in danger last fall, recommitted in August. He is ranked as the No. 2 cornerback safety prospect in the nation and No. 29 overall by the 247Sports Composite, making him the highest-ranked commit in the class. Stevens did not return a request for comment from USA TODAY Sports but told Rivals.com that he remains committed and will monitor the situation, especially the future of the defensive coaches.

Dylan Moses, a former LSU commit who is playing his senior season at IMG Academy in Florida, was among the biggest targets for Miles in this cycle. Moses is ranked among the top 5 prospects in the nation.

He has not commented other than to send a tweet with the word “Wow” in response to the news. He also is considering Alabama, UCLA, Texas among others and plans an December announcement.
